Bridge Repertory Theater

The Mission: At Bridge Rep, live theatre is not an end unto itself, but rather a means of connection. We connect actors to audiences, artists to artists, and the theatre to our community.

The History: Bridge Repertory was founded in 2012 by a group of six theatre artists, all under the age 30 at the time. They called themselves Founding Artistic Associates, and committed themselves to creating intimately staged productions from a variety of genres, all rooted in the captivating connection formed between live actors and live audiences.

Other chief values were the creation of job opportunities for early-to-mid career artists, the inclusion of underrepresented populations in our creative teams, and the cultivation of an audience diverse in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

As the first years passed, the core team evolved, and the term Founding Artistic Associates was exchanged for Playmakers. This title was devised in response to the common misconception around an organization’s “staff” -- the key difference being that the Playmakers, including the Producing Artistic Director, have not yet been able to take a single dollar in salary. In fact, they continue to work full-time day-jobs, since they pour every single dollar they raise into supporting the creative teams that make up Bridge Rep and the work you see on stage.

About the Year 5 Production: Dark Room

Written by George Brant

Directed by Olivia D'Ambrosio

Original Movement by Doppelganger Dance Collective

Dramaturgy by Alexander Platt

Dark Room will immerse you in a journey of eleven vignettes, each inspired by a different photograph from the canon of Francesca Woodman. Your silent guide will be a single girl in a polka dot dress -- a character created by Brant and based on Woodman, who took her own life in 1981 at the age of 22.
Theatrical, imaginative, dark and humorous, the vignettes are at once independent and hauntingly interwoven to create an unforgettable experience, all brought to life by an epic cast of 20 - 30 performers who identify as women.

As the chief focus of Bridge Rep's year long residency, Dark Room will have a series of workshops from fall 2017 - spring 2018, each culminating in a public showing so audiences can follow Dark Room's progress and learn how a production of this scope comes together. The full world premiere production will debut during the summer months of 2018.

Who is Bridge Rep?

1. A team that creates plays.
2. Those who might otherwise be referred to as "staff" or "company members".
3. The artist / entrepreneurs who make Bridge Rep go.

"We started this company completely from scratch and run virtually every aspect of its operations. Between us, we have a baker's dozen of MFA's and BFA's, all in theatre-related fields, from schools like Brown University, Boston College, CalArts, and the BU School of Theatre. We've also worked a lot professionally, at theatres like the Huntington, New Rep, Trinity Rep, and Actors' Shakespeare Project, just to name a few.

We Playmakers wear many hats -- all of them, in fact. And while it may be hard to understand, we go to our full-time jobs, catch a quick dinner break, then head to the theatre for our work. We rotate administrative and management roles so that when we act, direct, design, stage manage, or write, we can focus on the art, and vice versa."
